Journal #7

  1. What global comments/suggestions did you find the best from your peers? Why?

I found Diego’s comments on my essay to be extremely helpful. He gave very in-depth explanations not only in the comments but in the group discussion as well as to what I should do in order to make my essay stronger.

2. What were the best global comments/suggestions you offered your peers? Why?

This was my first time really getting in-depth and peer editing someone’s essay in the way we did with global comments and stuff so it was a bit challenging for me. I think the majority of my comments still focused on local mistakes, but I tried my best to find global issues. I think my best comments were on Amanda’s essay. I feel as though I gave my best input and was able to express my thoughts thoroughly.

3. What important feedback/discussion points weren’t captured on the page that came up during your discussion? Be specific and reference your peers and their papers.  You may benefit from looking back over the essays you peer-reviewed.

Important feedback that wasn’t on the page but came up during the discussion was that we gave each other a lot of great advice on our issues in our papers and ways we could make our writing stronger not only on this one essay but in the future. For example, Diego shared with us how he went to SASC a few times about this paper and got help from a tutor and it helped him out a lot. And I recommended that for anyone that struggled with local issues to read papers out loud because it makes it easier to catch simple mistakes.

4. What did you wish had come up looking back over your peer review comments?

There wasn’t really anything in specific that I wish came up, besides just having more feedback on what I could have done for my essay. I had quite a bit of comment on how my peer editors liked my writing and liked my input, but I wish I had more criticism to make my piece stronger because I know I could have used a lot more work.

5. How does this kind of peer review compare to peer review from high school?

This peer review style is quite different from the type of peer review we did in my high school English classes. Our main focus in high school when editing others’ writing pieces was to look for mistakes with grammar structure, run-on sentences, spelling mistakes, and punctuation errors. We never really focused on the larger picture and big idea unless they really stood out and needed serious work.
