Journal #18

After completing all of the readings we have done in class and rereading Consider the Lobster I feel as though I am more conflicted in my opinion about killing Lobster’s than I was before. When first reading I didn’t necessarily feel as though it tugged on my heartstrings because David Foster Wallace spoke of it as insects of the ocean so for me that devalued its life per say because personally, I am afraid/grossed out by insects and don’t really think twice about killing them so for me being someone that doesn’t eat or kill lobster in the first place it doesn’t necessarily affect me directly because I never have to see it happen.  On the other hand though, If I were put in a situation where I had the lobster in front of me and was told I had to kill it I wouldn’t be able to because I would feel guilty. This would be a problem for me because they are so large in size that seeing their eyes would resemble more of an “animal” rather than an insect to me then I would start considering some of the other readings we have done about animals being conscious or people becoming vegan and it would mess with my head.
